Longer Wands suit those with big outgoing personalities, while shorter ones are more suited to those lacking in that, cruel and bigoted wizards for example. Lengths and flexibilities are more attributed to the wizards personality. And while Ollivander used only those three, his father and grandfather, either of which will be who we get our Wand from in the game, used a wider variety of cores. While Phoenix Feathers are less commonly chosen and are more suited for a wider range of magic. Unicorn Hair on the other hand is more loyal to the first wizard that used it, and produces more consistent magic. Dragon Heartstrings make learning powerful spells easy, but are can more easily be used by a different wizard. Wand cores also have their own properties. Wand woods also have their own individual properties, according to Pottermore, Harry's Holly wand is good for those involved in dangerous or spiritual quests, while Voldemorts Yew wand is good for those attracted to the Dark Arts. Holly is the tree of July for example which is what Harry's wand is made out of, Ron, Hermione, and Malfoys Wands also correspond to this. The wand woods also sometimes, but not always correspond to a wizards birth month on the Celtic Calendar.

James Potters wand for example was said to be good at Transfiguration, as he was as he became an Animagus at a young age. The different factors of a wand, wood type, core, length, and flexibility all help determine what type of wizard you are and what magic you're best suited to. There was also a post on here the other day about wandlore, I think thats a good way to go into wand selection. Then after several of these the game can calculate them together and figure out which house you're best suited for. For example, we could get asked a question and get four options on how to respond, each of these corresponding to what each of the house values most, but in a way where it isn't obvious like all those old house quizzes used to be. My hope, which I've said a few time on here, is that the tutorial is set in Diagon Alley where we'll get a series of choices, whether it's dialogue or actions that help determine our house.
